MoTeC i2 Standard vs i2 Pro: what you get and how Pro is unlocked

MoTeC's analysis software comes in two levels, i2 Standard and i2 Pro, and both installers are on MoTeC's downloads page. MoTeC lists two ways to make log files work with i2 Pro: an upgrade on the logger that records the data, or a licence on the computer that opens it.

Here is what each level allows, according to MoTeC's own comparison table, and how the two unlock routes differ.

What i2 Standard limits

MoTeC describes i2 Standard as available to everyone with logging from a MoTeC data logger or ECU. It has the same core tools as Pro, but with lower limits on several components. These are the limits MoTeC lists:

Componenti2 Standardi2 Pro
Graphs5 graphs, 10 channelsUnlimited
Overlay laps1Unlimited
Histograms2, with 1 channelUnlimited
Scatter plots2, with 2 channelsUnlimited
Mixture maps1, with 2 channelsUnlimited
Track map reports1, no user channelsUnlimited
Rainbow track mapsNoneUnlimited
Section time reports1Unlimited
Channel reports2Unlimited

The overlay limit is the one most track-day drivers notice first. With one overlay you can put a single reference lap over your current lap. Pro lets you stack as many as you like, for example your best lap, your previous session and a faster driver's lap at the same time. MoTeC's summary of Pro is advanced maths, multiple overlay laps, and unlimited components, workbooks and worksheets.

Route 1: the Pro Analysis upgrade on your logger

The first way to get Pro is a password-enabled Pro Analysis upgrade on the ECU or logger itself. Once a device has it, every log file that device records is saved as a Pro file, and i2 Pro opens those files with all of its features. The upgrade belongs to the device, so it covers every computer you open its logs on. MoTeC sells upgrades through its dealers; a dealer listing for the C125 dash, for example, describes the Pro licence as unlimited in time and tied to the dash's serial number.

Route 2: a Feature Licence on your computer

The second way is a Feature Licence on the PC that does the analysis. The relevant one is called Open MoTeC Standard Log Files (part #22011). It lets one computer open any MoTeC log file in i2 Pro and use every Pro feature, while the file itself stays in its original format. It is a one-year licence, with a renewal under part #22012.

This suits someone who analyses data from several loggers, or loggers they don't own, on one laptop. The Pro Analysis upgrade suits someone who owns the logger and opens its data on more than one machine.

MoTeC lists two other Feature Licences: one that converts Pi ASCII exports into i2 Pro files (part #22031, with a 30-day option), and an i2 API licence (part #22021) for reading and writing MoTeC log files from code such as Excel, MATLAB or C#. Pricing is not on MoTeC's site; it directs buyers to an authorised MoTeC dealer.

Downloading i2

Both i2 Pro and i2 Standard are listed on MoTeC's public downloads page; the current builds are version 1.1.6 from July 2024.

Where LapLift fits

LapLift opens MoTeC .ld files and i2 CSV exports in a browser, with no install and no licence, and lets you overlay laps from your sessions and from laps other drivers have shared with you. The .ld reader was validated on C125 dash logs. Its lap times come from a 1 Hz lap counter, so they can differ from i2's by up to about a second; an i2 CSV export, which carries beacon markers, gives exact lap times.

LapLift is not a replacement for i2 Pro's maths channels, histograms, scatter plots or setup sheets. It covers lap comparison: overlays, a time-delta trace and corner speeds on a track map.

Limits, licence names and part numbers are from MoTeC's i2 product page and downloads page, read in October 2026. Check them before you buy; MoTeC may change licence terms.

Questions

Is MoTeC i2 Pro free?

The i2 Pro installer is a free download from MoTeC, but MoTeC lists two ways to make log files work with i2 Pro: a Pro Analysis upgrade on the logger, or a Feature Licence on the PC.

How many overlay laps does i2 Standard allow?

One. i2 Pro allows unlimited overlays.

Does the Feature Licence expire?

Yes. The Open MoTeC Standard Log Files licence (part #22011) is a one-year licence on one PC, renewable under part #22012. The Pro Analysis upgrade lives on the logger instead.

Can I open a MoTeC .ld file without i2?

Yes. LapLift reads .ld files and i2 CSV exports directly in a browser, so you can compare laps without installing i2.
